I have lived in Crozet my entire life, almost 24 years. I was born and raised in the house that I live in to this day with my mom, dad, and two younger sisters. I was then, and still am today, very hesitant about the growth happening in and around Crozet. I like the small town feel of this place I call home. I like walking into Parkway Pharmacy to pick up a prescription and they know my name before I even say it. I like walking into Greenhouse Coffee and knowing the food is delicious and the coffee is even better. I like the commitment the community has to shop local and support the small businesses in Crozet. For all of these reasons and so many more, I want to see Crozet remain small and quaint.
I realize, however, that growth is inevitable. It is not something I can fight or change. I often think about a saying that I know many of you have heard before, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em”. So that is just what I did when I became the Marketing and Events Coordinator for the DCI May of 2018. I work alongside all of the DCI Board Members who also have the mentality of “joining ‘em”. We want to try and be the voice of Crozet, to speak up for what Crozet is and will always be in our hearts and minds.
So my question now is not why, but what? What do I want to see in downtown Crozet? What do I think of when I think of the Crozet community that surrounds me and has for my entire life? What do I want Crozet to be known for? What do I want people to feel when they enter Crozet?
Please share with us your story of Crozet and answer my “what” questions above. Tell us why you love the little town that can.
